"You want to build your own solar panels and or wind generators quickly and efficiently.  Actually, both go together to make a great alternative energy system for your home or business.  I am an engineer who works with corporations to help them go green by converting to solar and wind energy. I know what it takes to create an alternative energy plan that works, and I know how to implement those plans."  Miller Britski (Alternative Energy Engineer) Helps Large Businesses to Convert To Green Power

Below find our reviews of the Top 5 How to Build Solar Panels Guides.  Each of the guides reviewed also include How to Build Wind Generators Guide because the two go hand in hand.  Meaning, if at all possible, you should include a wind generator to supplement feeding your solar panel batteries.

In my research for viable do it yourself green energy guides, there is one thing that astounded me, and that was the range of quality of information on how to convert your home to off grid green energy. Someone looking into actually going off grid can learn how to convert their home to clean energy by following several guide books.  Speaking to you as one who has lived completely off grid, and have built and installed a wind generator, I can tell you that you that it can be done even if you aren't particularly "handy" as the guides we recommend do explain and visually show you how to build.  So go ahead and get started today if you want to build an off grid power station of your own.  Feel as empowered as I did the first time I plugged into clean free energy, and watched satellite Television as my neighbors all experienced days upon days of outages from storms.

There are literally hundreds of products out there that teach you how to switch a home to solar or wind-generated energy, but some just don't explain it thoroughly enough to make the building process go fast and easy.  When you look at these guides, only a few of them are super clear and thorough.  I'm currently writing an ebook on how to build a solar powered home heater.  I'm writing it exactly as if I were standing right there next to you. So the guides I recommend are as close to this ideal as possible.

Converting your home using professionally-installed store-bought products is an expensive proposition. You'll cut your solar panel cost down to about half.  The one I'm working on in my garage at this moment only cost me in solar cells, solder, the iron, and some free glass. To save hundreds if not thousands of dollars, many are turning to do-it-yourself books just as I did, and are making the move to go green on their own. With the wide range of information available, let's first discuss what to look for in a good go-green guide.

First, a program that teaches you to convert your home is NOT the only thing you need. You will need a few low-cost tools, and order your solar cells for example, but after that, you'll be all set.

Secondly, NOT every home is appropriate for green conversion. If you live in an condo for example you don't always have the surface area for solar panels, or the land required to setup a windmill or adequate room for a solar panel.  However, with that said, I own a condominium and at this moment, our home owners Association has agreed to installing both solar electricity panels as well as solar air heaters.  I will also be adding the windmill shortly.  So it can be done if everyone on the condo/housing association is on board.  Our goal is to lower our monthly costs of electricity and gas so our Association fee can actually go down.  Plus, ours will be one of the first in our neighborhood to start lowering our building's fossil fuel footprint. But for now, we'll admit, we're doing it to save cash.

Thirdly, a how-to guide on solar panels and wind generators should explain how to convert your home to reduce and even get rid of your monthly power bill. In fact, if you do it right, you'll likely generate more energy than you use, and the power company will have to pay you for the power you feed back into the grid. Best of all, if you choose the right methods to convert your home it can be done for very little cost to you. In my case, I found the materials suggested were easy to find, and get started building the panels.  I learned where to find the glass and even found way more than I needed.

Finally, if you don't take the time to choose the right learning tools then you're just wasting your money and time. I've been burned many times by guides that didn't explain everything I needed.  I've even sent them emails with corrections for their books!  Plus, you even run the risk of creating problems for yourself when your real estate value drops due to the non-working solar panels that are covering the roof.  What's nice about the guides, they do show you how to make your projects look pretty professional-looking.  Choosing the right guide to learn with is the most important part of your success.

To help you choose a green power guide that works, along with some friends, I have worked to evaluate the top five downloadable learning products on the market today. We based my evaluations on what we thought was essential...And one more thing to mention is that these downloaded books also save on thousands of pounds of paper.  If you can read them without printing the entire guide out, maybe just some, you're doing that much more to save trees!

We asked ourselves, Does the guide provide the following?

  • Green Power - Obviously our main goal is to create actual electricity.  Green power needs to perform as well as on-grid. We tested how much power each do it yourself solar panel and windmill generated
  • Ease of Building - Can you reproduce what they are teaching you?  With a guide that teaches how to convert a home to green power, the material list should be clearly laid out, and the components of each project be it a solar panel or a wind generator, should be simple to build and built in a craftsman-like manner.  I like to call this "factory".  In other words, will your project look like a pro did it?  A good design should look as good as it performs.
  • Instructional Value - From the above criteria we gave higher ratings to those learning packages that taught us how to go green with ease. The best packages had everything clearly explained, drawn blueprints, and then further explained with how-to videos.  Videos are key in my opinion.  In an instant you can glean just what you're supposed to be doing.
  • Low Cost Materials - The main reason you and I and people like us choose to convert their home ourselves is to save money. So, of course we gave much higher ratings to the packages that taught us how to find parts for less.  It's fun being able to create a money saving device, and also do so darn cheap.
  • Good Availability of Parts - Some of the learning packages we tested recommended parts that weren't available. This is maddening in itself and we will save you this headache.  We gave higher marks to those that used parts that were widely available in your local hardware or big building centers.
  • Short Time in getting completed - The last thing you want is get in the middle of a solar panel project and not be able to finish it.  Next thing you know, you have the cat laying on your solar cells.  We found this had a lot to do with how well the material was explained, but some of the plans just weren't simple enough.
Then we gave an average rating - We gave each package an overall rating.

To follow you will find our ratings for the top five products that can teach you how to build solar panels and how to build wind generators.

From Miller Britski; With each of our evaluations we did take the time to build each component that the book/video suggested, and in the process we converted a home.

I have many friends who have been bugging me to help them go green. Two days ago my high school friend asked how to build a solar hot water heater and a solar air heater for his home.

The clear winner from our evaluations was Green Power Easy, but the other four products that made the top five weren't far behind.

Once you have your home running on green power, please post your photos on our Facebook Fan Page and show others your project. I enjoy hearing stories from others who have actually taken action and started their project!

Download your guide right now and order your supplies you'll need from the online sources you'll soon see and get your table set up to start building your solar panels or wind generators, whichever you choose to build first.  In 3 or 4 days, you can have everything you need to build your own power station.

Green Power Easy -Instant download

The clear winner from our evaluations was Green Power Easy. This learning package was developed by Peter and Jennifer Lowe, and it is the most well-put-together how-to-go-green guide that we tested.

You will purchase Green Power Easy and immediately be able to download the easy-to-follow instructions.  Included is the manual are blueprints, and how-to videos that make learning to build solar panels simple.
The focus of this guide is on converting your home to either wind or solar power or both. What's very nice about it is it's focus on low cost materials. All of the parts that Green Power Easy explains will be available to you locally as was our case, with most of the items coming from our hardware store.

Great recommendations on how and where to get deep-cycle batteries for free. You need batteries and they are generally very expensive.  Just knowing where to get them for free can save you many times over what the guide costs.
This guide shows you how everything is done step by step from how to build a single solar panel to creating a grid of batteries for storing solar and wind power. With the addition of the Green Power Easy TV videos included with the guide, this is an outstanding value, and makes converting your home more than possible, but actually quite easy.

Best of all, when you finish the conversion, the power generated by the system could very well be enough that you'll be feeding power back to the power company, even during peak usage times.  Our local Electric cooperative in fact just showcased two women doing just that on the cover of their newsletter!  This does work, and it can work for you.

For being the most complete package, that also worked better than the others we tested, we are giving this one the best-Green-Education-Package award:

Right Now Green Power Easy is on sale for $49.97. This is a huge discount from their cover price for the four guides of $139. We've been told that this special won't last long. If you've been looking to go green and save, you won't want to miss the chance to save even more money on your project.

In Summary: For clearly laid out materials list, the lowest cost of building supplies, a well done and complete solar panel video presentation, and the best solar power and wind power guides, and the best power output out of any system we tested, we are recommending Green Power Easy as our top recommendation. No other package we tested was as easy to follow.

#2 Highly Recommended

Earth 4 Energy

In second place we have an Instant downloadable guide called Earth 4 Energy.  Previously in top position, but with Green Power Easy now available, it got pumped out of first place.

The Earth 4 Energy guide also consists of both an instant download guide and accompanying videos that explain how to convert your home to green energy. The material list is clearly explained although, not to the level of Green Power Easy with their easy to follow instructions.

When we tested the components that we built using this system the power generated by the solar panels and the windmill did match that of our top choice.

The only complaint I had about this package was that this guide focuses more on the individual components and does follow through with converting the whole home, but not as well as with our winner.

Home Made Energy

In third place because not as well-written as our top two picks, we have Home Made Energy.  Still well worth the cost of the guide.

The Home Made Energy guide also consists of instantly downloadable guides with videos that explain how to convert your home to green energy. The material list is fairly well laid out, but the images are lacking some compared to Green Power Easy.

Sure, you'll be able to build solar panels as well as build wind turbines with the Home Made Energy guide, but you wouldn't be able to continue on to performing an entire green home conversion. If your only purpose is to build a single solar panel or wind turbine to supplement your homes energy requirements, you would do finewith this guide.

The illustrations and videos in Green Power Easy are far better. And, with the availability of Green Power Easy TV, Home Made Energy is simply lacking in content compared to the top pick.

#4 Also Highly Recommended

Energy 4 Green

The fourth product on our list is Energy 4 Green. This guide isn't bad, but it didn't hold up toe to toe with our first two on our list as far as the way concepts are explained.

Energy 4 Green uses the same types of parts, and suggests some of the same methods to build, but they don't explain how to put it together as well. Eventually you'd get it all together, and it'll work but you might scratch your head a bit more.

Based on the guides available, I'd still stick with our first pick.

Power 4 Home

Taking fifth place we have Power 4 Home. This green energy guide didn't fall short too badly for power generation, but we had some other problems that put it in fifth.

The biggest problem with this guide is the method the material is explained. All of the previously-reviewed guides on our list included both written and video components to make learning that much more easier and clear.

With power 4 home, the video component is missing and the entire guide is in written format. Now don't get me wrong, I can read and figure it out, but the absence of the video's confirmation that I'm doing things correctly did make it more difficult to understand what was being asked to do.

In the end if you want to get a home converted on this side of quickly, know that you might take longer to follow this guide.

The other issue we had with this guide was the materials list. Instead of parts that can be found locally, power 4 home suggests a supplier list which cost more to purchase.

On their sales page they state that you are able to build a windmill or a solar panel for less than $200, but if we had followed their materials list, it would have been higher.
